The pace of early voting for Denton’s runoffs is sprinting ahead of early turnout for the May 12 election.

In the first five days of early voting in May, 1,136 voters cast ballots at the Joseph A. Carroll Administration Building, some of which could have been for other races in the combined election. In the first four days of early voting for the June 23 runoffs, 1,573 voters went to the Carroll building to vote.

Denton County Elections Administrator Frank Phillips said the brisk turnout has been interesting.

“I’m anxious to see if we sustain those numbers through all of early voting,” Phillips said.

Mayor Mark Burroughs and Place 5 City Council member Pete Kamp were not able to capture more than half the vote in three-way races in May. They face challenges from Neil Durrance and David Zoltner, respectively.

Council member Kevin Roden, who was not up for re-election this term and has made no endorsements in the races, identified 365 people — of the 1,374 who cast ballots in person or 30 sent by mail in the first three days of early voting — who had not cast ballots in May.

“Most of those are coming from District 4, both in total voters and new voters,” Roden said.

District 4 is primarily made up of southern Denton neighborhoods, mostly south and east of central Denton and southwest of Interstate 35E.

Argyle and Little Elm also have runoff elections.

In Argyle, more than 50 people per day cast ballots during early voting for the May election, which included a school board race. A total of 137 ballots were cast over the first three days for the runoff between Place 3 council candidates Joan Delashaw and Jackie Thomas, along with three mail-in ballots.

Early voting continues at Argyle Town Hall, the Carroll building and Little Elm Town Hall from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday.

Those voters eligible to cast a ballot in any of the three cities may vote at any location during early voting, which ends Tuesday. For the election on Saturday, June 23, voters must report to their assigned precinct.
