University of North Texas officials have named James Maguire the system’s vice chancellor of administrative services and chief architect.
Maguire comes to UNT from Boise State University, where he previously served as associate vice president for campus planning and facilities.
He has also served as the capital program implementation director with the University of California System and an architect with a private practice.
Maguire will join the UNT system July 30. He replaces Richard Escalante, who retired in January after nine years at UNT.
Maguire was unavailable for comment Monday.
UNT Chancellor Lee Jackson said Maguire will oversee design and project staff members and collaborate with campus presidents and their senior staffs.
Lee said Maguire was one of the candidates interviewed who brought experience working at both an individual campus and a university system.
Lee said he was also impressed with Maguire’s ability to work well as a “collaborative colleague.”
“University facility projects are very collaborative, and I was impressed with James Maguire’s personal style and approach working with people,” Jackson said.
In a university statement, officials said Maguire will be responsible for overseeing major facility construction projects, including “architect and contractor selection, field oversight of ongoing projects, campus master planning, real estate acquisition, mineral agreements and related reporting to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.”
University building projects can differ widely, including residential housing, research buildings and other types of facilities, Jackson said.
“Mr. Maguire has had a long successful career working on exactly these projects, including student unions … and that’s very relevant to us,” Jackson said. UNT is looking to renovate the University Union.
Maguire has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and architecture from Rhode Island School of Design, and a master’s in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
He is a licensed architect affiliated with the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards.
