4 to 6 p.m. — Opening reception for “Passion, Art, Community: Denton, Texas, in Word and Image,” an exhibit based on the book of the same title with poetry by Karla K. Morton accompanied by works by area artists. In the Meadows Gallery at the Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. Event includes a book signing by Morton and the artists, and books will be available for purchase. Exhibit runs through Oct. 28. Visit www.dentonarts.com.

5 to 7 p.m. — Opening reception for “Contemplating Limits” at the UNT Art Gallery, in the UNT Art Building, 1201 W. Mulberry St. Exhibit includes sculptures by Austin Ballard, photographs by Robin Dru Germany, and paintings by Kirsten Macy and Gary Passanise. Artist gallery talks start at 6 p.m. Free. 7 to 9 p.m. — The League of Women Voters of Denton meets in Room 176 of the UNT Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building, on Hickory Street at Avenue C. UNT professor Tom LaPoint will present the program, “Risky Business,” about what threatens us, how we think about risk and how the two are sometimes surprisingly different. 7 p.m. — “Rockin’ Lock-In” for kids ages 6-11 at the Denton Civic Center, 321 E. McKinney St. Supervised sleepover includes an outdoor scavenger hunt, flashlight tag and a marshmallow roast. Drop-off will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, and kids must be picked up at 8 a.m. Saturday. The $15 fee includes breakfast and evening snacks.
