Sanger seeks to fill Place 1 council spot

SANGER -- Sanger officials are seeking applicants to replace Marjory Johnson, who recently resigned her Place 1 City Council seat.

Johnson took a job in Lewisville that conflicts with the council meeting times.

She was elected to the Sanger council in May 2010, and her term was scheduled to end in May 2013.

“She simply stepped down because she took a new job in Lewisville, which would keep her from making each of our meetings,” Sanger Mayor Thomas Muir said. “We’re taking applications now, and it will be up to council on who is picked.”

Muir said it’s never ideal to see a council member leave before a term has ended, but he said he understands that sometimes tough decisions have to be made.

“When an opportunity opens, sometimes you have to take it,” he said.

Johnson presented her resignation letter to the council during the Aug. 20 meeting. This is the second time Johnson has resigned from a public position before her term expired. In 2008, she stepped down as Lake Dallas mayor before moving to Sanger.

Muir said the city issued a public notice to inform residents of the opening.

City Manager Mike Brice said the council will look to appoint someone by Oct.1 during a Monday-night meeting.

Sanger residents interested in filling the former council member’s seat can pick up an application at City Hall, 502 Elm St. The council will interview potential applicants and appoint a new council member who will serve until the term expires in May.

The council meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Monday of each month at City Hall.
