Tiger Jazz Band wins national competition

McMath Middle School has been named the middle school champion of the 2012 National Jazz Honors Project.

The national competition was sponsored by the National Foundation for Music Educators and featured middle school band entries from across the United States. McMath’s Tiger Jazz Band was named the sole national recipient in the middle school jazz ensemble category.

The Tiger Jazz Band is directed by Travis Harris, who was a member of the award-winning University of North Texas Two O’Clock Lab band while earning his master’s degree in jazz studies at the school.

Members of the national winning Tiger Jazz Band include:

•  Saxophones: Corey Weeks, Nicole Fox, Malik Foster, DekiseTellis, Jonathan Hannah;

•  Trombones: Miles Koroly, Peyton Dunworth, Angelica Ozuna;

•  Trumpets: Josh Eckel, Christian Lopez, Gavin Sieber, Kaleigh Dick;

•  Rhythm Section: Aaron McGregor, Dawson Wright, Sarah Shirley, Veronica Clark, David Steward and Sion Lee.
