The Archangel Funeral Home and Chapel on Maple Street is shown as closed Thursday after state officials issued a cease and desist order Wednesday.

A Denton funeral home is apparently out of business after being issued a cease and desist order from the Texas Funeral Service Commission.

The doors to Archangel Funeral Home and Chapel at 116 Maple St. were locked Thursday, and its telephone number was out of service.

According to a news release from the state licensing agency for funeral homes, the order was issued Wednesday. The news release stated that Archangel was conducting the funeral business without a license.

Donna Potter, a spokeswoman for the agency, said that Archangel did not have a license to conduct a funeral business. Thayer Lawson of Fort Worth applied for a license June 28, she said.

“There were some issues that were never resolved, and then we learned that they were conducting business without a license,” she said.

The agency has the authority to issue a cease and desist order without a judge’s signature, she said.

Potter said Archangel had conducted at least two funerals without a license, and that the funeral home did not appear to be preparing for any funerals when the agency closed it.

County assumed names records show that Lawson and Yolanda Tatum applied for the assumed name of Archangel Funeral Home and Chapel on March 17, 2009. On Jan. 4, 2010, Lawson applied again for the same assumed name without Tatum.

Neither of them could be reached for comment.

Denton Record-Chronicle obituary notices from Archangel Funeral Home and Chapel go back as far as July 2009.
