The Denton Public School Foundation will welcome a new executive director on Monday.
Longtime community volunteer and foundation board member Jackie Jackson will replace Vicki Sargent, who resigned as executive director and is now the school district’s executive director of elementary academic programs.
According to a statement released by the Denton school district, Jackson will be responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing all fundraising activities for the foundation. She will also oversee foundation volunteers and committees.
The Denton Public School Foundation is a separate entity from the school district that funds teacher grants and student scholarships.
Jackson, who officially completed her final day as a Ryan High School receptionist Friday, said she’s eager to get started.
“I find it’s an extremely rewarding place to put my time, work with the schools and work with people who are committed to helping the schools,” she said. “It’s exciting, somewhat daunting, to follow in the footsteps of Vicki Sargent, who has done an amazing job the last 10 years.
“It’s kind of like coming home again.”
Recently, Jackson served as treasurer on the foundation’s board of directors. For nearly a decade she’s served as chairwoman of the foundation’s annual fundraiser, the Groundhog Day Gala. In previous years she’s also served as president of the Denton Community Council of PTAs and as chairwoman of the Volunteer Advisory Board.
A licensed social worker, Jackson has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso, has been a social worker for the state in Houston and at a Cook Children’s clinic in Denton.
Jackson said she looks forward to “working with the community and getting the word out to people about what an incredible school district we have in Denton and how they could support it.”
Jackson said she applied for the position because of her love for the foundation and because others encouraged her to apply. It wasn’t something she expected she would be doing in this point of her life, she said.
“It was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up, to work with the foundation in a different way,” she said.
Denton schools Superintendent Jamie Wilson calls Jackson “a perfect fit” for the position.
“She will continue the momentum started by Mrs. Sargent as the foundation continues to grow,” he said. “We’re just looking forward to continuing the momentum.”
