United Way’s efforts pay off

Fundraising for the United Way of Denton County’s 2012 campaign has topped $900,000, with about three months left in this year’s drive, said Gary Henderson, president and CEO.

“That’ s slightly ahead of last year,” he said. “We’re pleased with the progress so far, but we have a long way to go.”

Henderson said the organization is about 5 percent ahead of fundraising efforts at this point last year. That campaign concluded the 2011 year with more than $1.8 million in donations and pledges.

This year’s fundraising is also slightly ahead of what campaigns had raised at this point over the last two or three years, Henderson said.

This year’s drive began in July.

Money raised will support United Way’s 22 partner agencies, which provide various services including mentors for at-risk youth, educational programs for young children from low-income homes and food, clothing, crisis, housing, utility and medication assistance.

In 2011, the organization announced that it would not set a campaign goal as it had done in previous years. No goal was set for this year’s campaign also.

Henderson said by visiting with local companies that conducted campaigns, United Way leaders learned that what people cared most about were community needs.

“We’re finding that they’re happy talking about needs in the community rather than goals and numbers,” he said. “They want to hear more about their community and how they can help.”

He said that’s contributed to “stronger giving” this year.

United Way of Denton County recently completed its Pacesetter Campaign, a program in which local companies conduct workplace campaigns to raise funds for the organization. According to organization reports, the Pacesetter Campaign drew $845,800 in donations at the close of the drive last month.

A fundraising effort scheduled for Oct. 18 — “A Night of Mystery on Hospitality Hill” — is a progressive dinner featuring storytellers.

Henderson said in January that the United Way will play host to “UNITED Tribute” to thank the community and recognize companies, individuals and volunteers that contributed to 2012 campaign efforts. The event will take place Jan. 26, 2013.

United Way will wrap up this year’s campaign and fundraising efforts in December.
