The Denton County Transportation Authority is giving away 500 trees to area residents Saturday.

Beginning at 10 a.m., DCTA staff members will distribute one tree per household, while supplies last, in the Fred Moore High School parking lot, 815 Cross Timber St. in Denton.

DCTA is partnering with the city of Denton Parks and Recreation Department on a community enhancement project to add landscaping and fencing along the A-train rail trail between Prairie Street and Shady Oaks Drive.

The improvements are funded through a grant by the Texas Department of Transportation.

The Texas Tree Foundation is sponsoring a tree planting along Kerley Street on Saturday that will complement the joint effort.

The community enhancement project is still in the design phase but is expected to be under construction by spring 2013.
