The Denton City Council gave staff the go-ahead to apply for a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation that would help pay for a trail and bridge in Evers Park.
The staff told the council that, because the engineering work is already finished for the bridge, the project should be competitive.
“We’ve been trying to build a bridge over that drainage channel for years,” said Emerson Vorel, head of the city’s parks and recreation department.
The city hopes to use one of the county’s historic iron bridges for another, smaller channel crossing, Vorel said.
The trail and bridge would connect the park, North Branch Library and two area schools to the neighborhoods in McKamy Evers Estate and North Point.
The trail would also connect to other trails to North Lakes Park and the University of North Texas Discovery Park.
If funded, the city would pay $265,000 and the grant would pay the rest of the $1.3 million estimated price tag for the bridge.
