The Denton school board approved the district’s 2013-14 school calendar 6-0 at a Tuesday meeting.
Assistant Superintendent Robert Bostic said the calendar is not much different from the current 2012-13 calendar.
“In fact, I really can’t see many major changes,” he said. “We don’t have any major days, major breaks that have changed.”
The district’s biggest unknown about next year’s school calendar at this point are designated dates for the state standardized test — the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness also known as STAAR, Bostic said.
“We’ve documented what we know so far … but when the Legislature goes back into legislative session, they have every right to change assessment [dates], and that could alter some of our dates, but that depends on the Legislature,” he said.
The 83rd Texas Legislature regular session begins Jan. 8. Bostic said he’s hopeful there will not be any changes in assessment dates that drastically alter the district’s 2013-14 calendar.
As the 2013-14 calendar currently stands, school begins Aug. 26 and ends June 5, 2014.
Students and teachers will have a full week off for Thanksgiving, Nov. 25-29, 2013. Winter break is slated for Dec. 23, 2013. Winter break is slated for Dec. 23, 2013, through Jan. 6, 2014, with spring semester classes beginning Jan. 7, 2014.
Other important dates on the calendar include: Labor Day, Sept. 2, 2013; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 20, 2014; spring break, March 10-14, 2014; bad-weather days if needed, April 18 and May 23, 2014, and Memorial Day, May 26, 2014.
A district staff development day is slated for Oct. 7 and students will have the day off from school.
Graduation for Denton’s three traditional high schools is slated for June 6, 2014.
Ceremonies will begin with Denton High School at 11 a.m., followed by Guyer High School at 2:30 p.m. and Ryan High School at 6 p.m. All graduation ceremonies will take place at the University of North Texas Coliseum.
“We’ve researched all the dates; we’ve worked with the universities, and to the best of our knowledge, this calendar is in keeping with their breaks and will serve the best interest of the students,” board President Mia Price said.
In other business Tuesday, the school board voted 6-0 to rezone 115 schoolchildren living in the southeast portion of the current Paloma Creek Elementary School attendance zone boundary and the current southeast portion of the Savannah Elementary School attendance boundary to the Providence Elementary School attendance boundary, effective the 2013-14 school year.
The school board approved the 2011-12 fiscal audit 6-0. Auditors reported a clean audit and reported the addition of $13.5 million to general fund reserves for the 2011-12 year.
The board also approved hiring Richard Valenta of the Birdville school district to replace Dennis Stephens — who is slated to retire in January — as assistant superintendent for human resources.
