A recent murder-suicide in Providence Village has the community joining forces with friends and family to present a benefit dinner and silent auction next month.
“After the murder of his mom, a 10-year-old boy is left parentless,” said Ralph Haywood, a benefit volunteer and friend. “We need all the help we can get to help see he can stay in his home, school and community.”
Cristina Maria Allen, 27, was fatally shot Nov. 5 after disputes with her ex-boyfriend, Nelson Rafael Rodriguez-Doran, according to the Denton County Sheriff’s Office. Afterward, 29-year-old Rodriguez-Doran shot and killed himself, deputies said.
Allen’s 10-year-old son was not at the house at the time of the shootings.
The boy’s maternal grandmother is now caring for him but needs help to cover the sudden expenses, Haywood said.
“My wife, a few teachers and several others just got together within the community to plan this event,” he said. “We certainly want the best for the boy.”
Friends and family said Allen was a dedicated advocate for disaster victims, having worked with the Federal Emergency Management Agency since the age of 18.
The benefit event will be at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 at Monaco Elementary School. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $6 for children.
Organizers said they would appreciate any donations for the silent auction, as well as food and monetary donations.
“We are really hoping to have a very successful event,” Haywood said. “To be shocked with 200 to 300 diners would be just incredible. All proceeds are directly going to support the Allen family and the young boy’s future.”
