CORINTH — Residents will see a couple of changes to their recycling and trash collection services beginning today.
The city of Corinth’s public works officials will begin distributing blue, 65-gallon recycling carts today to replace the city’s older green, 35-gallon recycling carts.
The new blue recycling carts will help the city phase into a new trash collection contract that begins Jan. 2. Officials ask residents to place their green carts on the curb for pickup.
The city’s contract with its current provider, Waste Management, expires Dec. 31, so city officials formed a committee in the fall to search for a new provider, City Manager Jim Berzina said.
City Council members voted recently to approve a five-year contract with Community Waste Disposal with an option for three one-year renewals.
Berzina said the city wanted to explore other companies to see if better options were available.
“The original contract goes back to 1996 with renewals and several amendments along the way,” he said. “We wanted services equivalent to or superior to the current service levels.”
The new contract is estimated to be worth about $656,000 annually, based on service fees. Community Waste Disposal will be compensated out of the fees the city collects for residential waste and recycling services in accordance with the contract terms.
The new collection service routes will begin Jan. 2. Officials say residents should expect their normal trash collection Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. Residents can visit the city of Corinth’s website for a map of the new Monday through Friday collection schedule.
Community Waste Disposal, a Dallas-based company, is used by 13 other North Texas cities, including Allen, Azle, Burleson, Keller, Little Elm and Wylie, city officials said.
And according to the city documents, the new partnership with the new waste pick-up service provider will save residents about $20 a year in fees.
Greg Roemer, an official with Community Waste Disposal, said the city will receive services that are unmatched and reasonably priced.
The new contract includes trash pickup, storm debris clean-up and on-demand household hazardous waste collection services.
“We included a comprehensive plan for storm debris in our proposal,” Roemer said. “We can mobilize as many as 35 trucks with three men each and Bobcats.”
