Jury selection begins today for the capital murder trial of a Dallas man connected to a fatal shooting at a Denton County home.

Keven Alvino Young Sr., 33, is being tried in the shooting death of 34-year-old Desmond Pope, also of Dallas, in the garage of Young’s ex-girlfriend’s house in Carrollton on Oct. 30, 2010.

According to police, Pope was visiting the home of two sisters in the 2200 block of Lockwood Drive when Young showed up to the residence unannounced, upset his ex-girlfriend didn’t call him back.

Pope was killed in the garage as he tried to leave the home, police say.

At the time of the incident, Carrollton Police said Young started yelling at Pope when he tried to leave.

Police believe that’s when Young shot Pope, casually walking away saying, “he’s dead.”

Young drove off after the shooting in an SUV later found abandoned on the George Bush Turnpike at Marsh Lane, police said.

After a two-day search, Young turned himself into the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, where he now sits awaiting trial on a $500,000 bond.

Past reports indicate the two men didn’t know each other and that Pope wasn’t in a relationship with Young’s ex.

Young was appointed Lewisville-based attorney Carlton Hughes and prosecutors will be Michael Graves and Rick Daniel.

If convicted, capital murder can lead to the death penalty or an automatic life sentence without the possibility of parole.

“Death is not being sought by the state,” said Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck.

The trial will be held before 362nd District Court Judge Bruce McFarling.
