Lewisville police arrested a man on Saturday in connection with a murder that happened on New Year’s Day in Flower Mound.

Anthony Huynh, 40, of Lewisville has been charged in connection with the murder of Lamont Darnell White, who was 54 when he was killed.

Huynh was initially arrested on Saturday after a man was shot in the parking lot of a hotel in the 1900 block of Lakepointe Drive in Lewisville, Lewisville police Capt. Kevin Deaver said.

Huynh had been a guest at the hotel since October 2012.

The 42-year-old man who was shot called police and drove himself to the Medical Center of Lewisville early Saturday morning, Deaver said.

The man told police “he was shot while driving in the parking lot by an unknown person for no apparent reason,” according to a news release from Lewisville police.

Police reviewed surveillance footage from the hotel and located evidence in the hotel room where Huynh was staying, “including a weapon that we believe was used during the shooting,” Deaver said.

Huynh was initially arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and later charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after police determined he was involved in the hotel shooting, Deaver said.

The condition of the man who was shot in Lewisville is not being released, according to the news release, but the injuries are not life threatening.

During the investigation, one of the Lewisville detectives “recognized Huynh’s vehicle as being similar to a vehicle that was used in a murder in Flower Mound,” Deaver said.

In a news release, Flower Mound police said that Lewisville police “recovered a weapon believed to be used in both offenses.”

On Jan. 2, Flower Mound police responded to shots fired in the 500 block of Flower Mound Road and found White sitting in a white Mazda with a gunshot wound to the head, according to the probable cause affidavit Flower Mound police released Monday.

He was taken by CareFlite helicopter to a Dallas hospital, where he later died. Police learned of his death at 4:45 a.m. Jan. 2, Flower Mound police Capt. Kurt Labhart said at the time.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner ruled Lamont’s death a homicide.

Surveillance footage from the store where White worked in the 700 block of Hebron Parkway in Lewisville showed him leaving at 10 p.m. Jan. 1 and being followed by Huynh in a white Nissan 350Z, according to the affidavit.

Huynh waived his Miranda rights and agreed to speak with police, the affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, Huynh initially denied involvement in both cases but eventually admitted to both shootings.

Huynh told police that he approached both victims because they looked like they were acting suspiciously, the affidavit stated.

He told police he was using a strobe feature on a flashlight while following White, who was believed to be driving home. Police believe this is what caused White to pull off into the parking lot of a closed shopping center in Flower Mound, according to the affidavit.

Huynh told police that when he pulled up next to White’s vehicle, in his blind spot, he saw the victim begin to get out of the vehicle, but he couldn’t see his right hand so he shot White multiple times, the affidavit said.

He drove back to his hotel and disposed of the spent casings there, the affidavit said.

“Huynh said he did not call the police after either shooting because of his criminal record,” the affidavit stated.

Labhart said Monday that when they were initially investigating the murder, he thought Huynh and White had known one another because they both left from the same place at the same time.

“It’s our belief now that this was more or less a random act,” Labhart said.

Huynh, who was arrested and taken to Denton County Jail, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felon in possession of a firearm and murder.

The bail for the assault charge is set at $500,000, the firearm possession charge is set at $50,000 and the murder charge is set at $1 million.
