An unattended motorcycle was likely the cause of a Monday afternoon fire at a residence off Audra Lane in Denton.
Chad Weldon, assistant fire marshal in Denton, said the homeowner had been charging the battery in his motorcycle in the garage and left it running. A short time later, smoke could be seen from the garage as a fire started.
While out on the second-floor balcony of the home next to the garage at about 12:45 p.m., Leticia Black noticed smoke coming from the garage and alerted her parents, Lawrence and Kay Miller, who called emergency officials to the scene.
Denton Fire Department Battalion Chief Ken Gold said smoke could be seen from the Bell Avenue station and the garage was in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.
“We hit the line pretty quick and knocked it [the fire] down,” Gold said. “It had a pretty good head start by the time we got here. We were concerned about the pickup truck and the shed nearby.”
Both the shed and vehicle sustained minimal damage from the fire.
The fire made a brief comeback when the first fire truck ran out of water, a problem presented by its distance from the nearest hydrant. Gold said a second truck arrived and firefighters were able to get the flames under control quickly.
It was after 1:30 p.m. when firefighters were able to trudge through the remains, taking pictures of the scene and pulling charred items out.
The last unit cleared the scene at about 3:30 p.m.
Black said the garage contained a riding lawnmower, the motorcycle and other lawn equipment. Some smoke lingered as did the thick smell of the garage’s contents. The only color that can be seen from a distance was some of the insulation that remained pink and undamaged.
“There was quite a bit of flammable stuff on the west side of the garage. That garage was built by hand by my great-grandfather,” Black said.
Weldon said he wasn’t able to determine what specifically led to the fire, be it faulty equipment or other causes. There were no injuries from the blaze, which caused an estimated $50,000 in damages.
