Jury finds Young guilty of murder

A jury found Keven Young guilty of murder and sentenced him to life in prison this afternoon in the death of Desmond Poe, in Carrollton in 2010.

Young, 33, must also pay a $10,000 fine.

Prosecutors had sought capital murder, which would have included an automatic life sentence. The jury instead convicted Young of murder and deliberated the sentence in a punishment phase.

Poe, 34, was shot and killed in the garage of Young’s ex-girlfriend’s house in Carrollton on Oct. 30, 2010.

Defense attorney Carlton Hughes tried to sway the jury several times during closing remarks, focusing on “reasonable doubt.”

Trial testimony indicated that Poe was drinking — his blood-alcohol level being above the legal limit — and smoking marijuana before he and Young’s ex, Ebony Chandler, had an argument at her home the night of the shooting.

Gunshot residue experts told the jury there was a microscopic fleck — “one-1,000th of a grain of pepper” — found on Chandler’s hand.
