A weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day events will kick off Saturday with a community cleanup around Fred Moore Park.

This is the first year event organizers have had a cleanup instead of a parade, said Denesha Factory, a recreation specialist at the Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center.

Event coordinators wanted Saturday to be a day of service, Factory said.

Denton residents can gather at 10 a.m. at the American Legion hall at 629 Lakey St. to start the cleanup of the community around the park.

Also at 10 a.m. Saturday, vendors will be at the recreation center, located at 1300 Wilson St., offering information and food. A noon program will feature guest speaker Alma Clark, a Southeast Denton community member, Factory said. The University of North Texas Voices of Praise Gospel Choir will sing, and there will be a candlelight vigil with a moment of silence, she said.

The celebration will continue at 11 a.m. Monday at the recreation center with a flag football game for children. Later in the day, community members will march from Fred Moore Park to the recreation center. The march will start at 5 p.m.

“You can make signs and banners,” Factory said. “Come on out.”

The Denton Faith Alliance will lead the evening’s service, which will include a dinner sponsored by the Denton chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and local churches. The event is free.

Also Monday, the Denton Faith Alliance will be leading a community service project at the Fred Moore Day Nursery School.

Starting at 9 a.m., members of the faith alliance and local congregations and any volunteers are invited to help with tasks at the school — relocating a large play structure, installing a sandbox, laying groundcover, installing edging, sanding and varnishing furniture, painting, doing yard work and cleaning. The service day will end at noon.

The alliance also is working to raise $5,000 to buy groundcover for the playground and new equipment and supplies for the school. Donations can be made directly to the Fred Moore Day Nursery School, 821 Cross Timber St., Denton, TX 76205.

Flower Mound will have a celebration Sunday called “Fulfilling the Dream.” It will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Flower Mound High School auditorium, 3411 Peters Colony Road. Journalist Bob Ray Sanders will be the keynote speaker. There also will be art and essay contests for fourth- through 12th-graders.
