Young gets life in prison

Denton County jurors spent almost five hours in deliberations before convicting a man of murder Thursday.

Keven Young, 33, was found guilty of murder and received the maximum sentence — life in prison with a $10,000 fine. He will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

Young was convicted of shooting and killing Desmond Poe, 34, in the garage of Young’s ex-girlfriend’s house in Carrollton on Oct. 30, 2010.

Prosecutors Michael Graves and Rick Daniel sought a conviction on a charge of capital murder, which would have automatically included a life sentence with no eligibility for parole.

During the punishment phase, the jury examined more details in the life of Young, who moved to Dallas to live with a friend after breaking up with girlfriend Ebony Chandler.

Young was born in Louisiana. He was convicted there of attempted second-degree murder in 1997.

He served 10 years, the maximum sentence, with the Louisiana Department of Corrections.

Young told the jury that the Louisiana charges were “untrue.”

In Denton County, Young was convicted of two family violence assault charges and served the maximum sentence of one year for each.

“This man is a legitimate threat,” Daniel told jurors before the punishment phase. “If he isn’t put away for life, who knows who the next potential victim may be. He is a risk to society.”

Defense attorney Carlton Hughes made few comments to the jury but did thank them for their time and careful consideration. He requested that the jury consider that Young is a father and children would be impacted by his absence.

Hughes said he has no doubt that his client will appeal the court’s decision.

“It’s never good when you lose a case, but it’s better than life without parole,” Hughes said before leaving the courtroom.

Graves said the jury took time and consideration during sentencing and prosecutors appreciate it.

“We respect what they did [giving life], and we just hope this brings some closure to the family of Desmond Poe,” Graves said.
