Carroll to head up school district until permanent superintendent hired

KRUM — Cody Carroll, assistant superintendent for Krum public schools, will lead the district in the interim as the school board begins its search for a new superintendent.

Carroll will begin his role as interim superintendent Jan. 29 — one day after outgoing Superintendent Mike Davis steps down.

On Jan. 16, the Krum school board voted 7-0 to release Davis from his contract and enter into an agreement with its administrator of nearly five years in which he provides consultant services to the school district and its interim superintendent or permanent superintendent in accordance with conditions and terms set in the agreement.

Details of the agreement were not readily available at press time.

Carroll joined the district last July. Prior to that, he led the Meadow school district, located nearly 30 miles southwest of Lubbock, for five years.

After the school board named Carroll interim superintendent, he said he was honored with the appointment and hopes he “can carry on the good work Mr. Davis has done the last five years.”

Carroll, 44, said he has an interest in applying for the permanent superintendent position.

“As the process goes forward, I’ll see what happens,” he said.

Board President Phil Enis said Carroll’s experience as a superintendent is what factored into the board’s decision to name him interim superintendent.

“In the time that he’s been here this year, we’ve felt very comfortable with his working style and compatibility with the board,” Enis said. “It’s a luxury to have someone on staff that you feel confident in putting in that position.”

Carroll will receive a monthly supplement of more than $2,600 to offset the difference between his assistant superintendent and interim superintendent duties, Enis said.

The school board will work with Carroll for a couple of months and will decide in March on the hiring process it will follow to name its next superintendent, Enis said. It’s the board’s intent to name a candidate to the permanent position in May, but the process could stretch into June or July.

Davis will serve as a consultant for the district for a period of four months, Enis said. He said Davis will provide an “overlap” between the transition from the interim to the permanent administration.

Davis said he is willing to do anything to help the district in this transition period.

He said he was pleased to see Carroll named interim superintendent.

Davis has known Carroll for more than a decade. As superintendent in the Meadow school district, Davis hired Carroll as head football coach for Meadow High School.

The last six months Carroll has worked for Krum have been smoother than he ever could have anticipated, Davis said.
