Man fleeing state troopers killed in motorcycle crash, passenger dies at hospital

A motorcyclist died at the scene and his passenger later died at an area hospital after crashing Thursday morning on Sherman Drive.

Authorities identified the motorcycle driver as James P. Guy, 41, and the passenger as Tiffany N. James, 25. Both were Denton residents.

Lonny Haschel, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman, said troopers tried to stop a black Yamaha motorcycle on a traffic stop shortly after 8 a.m. when the motorcyclist sped off and fled.

“Troopers observed a motorcyclist on Loop 288 at U.S. Highway 380 traveling north when they began to make a stop for a registration violation,” Haschel said.

The driver continued on and exited at Sherman Drive, turning south onto Sherman, Haschel said.

“The motorcyclist elected to cross double yellow lines as a van pulled out onto East Sherman Drive from Buckingham, and [the motorcyclist] then began driving southbound in northbound lanes at a high rate of speed,” Haschel said.

As the motorcycle approached Denton Fire Station No. 4 at Kings Row, the driver of a black 2008 Chevy Silverado in the right lane saw the motorcyclist approaching and tried to avoid a collision, Haschel said.

The motorcycle struck the front of the Chevy truck, ejecting the motorcyclist and his passenger.

Haschel said the motorcyclist was traveling “much faster” than the trooper.

James was initially transported to Denton Regional Medical Center. Later in the day, she was transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth, where she died, officials said.

Troy Taylor, the chief death investigator for Denton County, said the two were wearing helmets.

“The impact was too severe,” Taylor said. “He was going an estimated 90 mph and his helmet flung off. His cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.”

Haschel said the driver of the truck sustained minor cuts and bruises from shattering glass but was not transported to a hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
