With severe storm season fast approaching North Texas, the need to be alert and informed is more important now than ever.

Trained storm spotters, according to the National Weather Service Office in Fort Worth, helped save lives during the 2012 storm season.

A free SKYWARN training session will be held at Texas Women’s University in the Multipurpose Classroom Laboratory building from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23.  The program is free and open to the public. No advance registration is required but plan on a packed crowd.

While four classes are generally held in Denton a year, this is the only one that offers more advanced classes and training.

The program will discuss thunderstorm formation, ingredients and features associated with severe storms.

The presentation also will review tornado formation and behavior, and will give some insight as to why some storms produce tornadoes and some do not.
