Joy Sanchez, a first-grade teacher at Cross Oaks Elementary School in Cross Roads, was arrested Thursday night after an altercation with another woman, according to a Denton Police Department news release.
Police stated the altercation apparently stemmed from Sanchez showing up at a residence in the 900 block of Wintercreek Drive to return an item belonging to a man they were both having a relationship with, according to the news release.
Officers responded to a 911 call at 10:16 p.m. Thursday and reported that the women and two children suffered from red, watery eyes. Both women appeared to have bruising and scratches on them as well, the news release stated.
According to police, the investigation determined that Sanchez allegedly injured the woman living at the residence and her two children with pepper spray.
Sanchez was arrested and taken to the city of Denton jail. She was arraigned Friday, with bond set at $5,000 on a charge of injury to a child and $2,500 on a charge of assault, according to police.
As of press time Friday, she had not posted bond.
Sanchez has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, Denton school district spokeswoman Sharon Cox said.
Cox was not sure if the leave is paid or unpaid.
Sanchez has worked for the district 11 years according to the Cross Oaks Elementary School website.
“We have immediately placed the teacher on administrative leave and we’re working with the police department in their investigation,” Cox said.
