$90 million project will add lanes and grading

FM2499 will see $90 million in improvements thanks to a partnership among the Texas Department of Transportation, the Regional Transportation Council and Denton County.

Officials have come together to fund the extension of FM2499 from State Highway 121 North to Denton Creek. The project will add lanes and grading work at Stars and Stripes Way and Grapevine Mills Drive. This section of FM2499 was originally part of the DFW Connector project, which is the expansion of state highways 121 and 114 through Grapevine, north of the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. But it lacked construction funds until now.

“Through our continued advocacy of the project, demonstrating the necessity for it, our partners at the state and regional level have funded this new segment to be included,” said Precinct 4 County Commissioner Andy Eads. “This impacts not only Denton County but Dallas and Tarrant counties as well. This is where all three counties meet.”

Eads said the project would greatly improve the accessibility from Denton County down into the airport and counties to the south.

“Once FM2499 is connected all the way up to Denton, this will be a direct path from Denton down to the airport, which has been in the plans for many years,” Eads said.

Construction could begin this fall and is expected to take two years.

At the same time this segment of FM2499 will be under construction, the expansion of State Highway 121 from the Sam Rayburn Tollway over to the DFW Connecter will be under construction, Eads said. It’s part of a separate project, but both projects meet there.

Eads said projects of this magnitude would not be possible without the entities all working together.

In a recent news release, Flower Mound Mayor Tom Hayden said he is thrilled the funding has been approved for this vital connector between FM2499 and Highway 121.

Hayden also commended the commissioners and the agencies, saying the connector will not only increase the mobility for local residents but also the many visitors who travel through the community every day.
