Board to meet again to vote on appointment of Dallas campus president

The University of North Texas Board of Regents named Ronald T. Brown the sole finalist for the presidency of UNT Dallas.

The board met Thursday in a called special meeting via conference call to name the finalist.

Under Texas law, the board must name a finalist at least 21 days before making an appointment. The board will meet again after that time and vote on the appointment, said Buddy Price, spokesman for UNT. No date has been set.

Chancellor Lee Jackson could not be reached for comment.

UNT Dallas President John Ellis Price will step down when his contract ends in August.Price announced in July that he would be stepping down. He is the first president of the Dallas campus and has served since August 2010. Prior to becoming president, he served as campus CEO since 2001.

Brown is currently the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Brown could not be reached for comment.

At Wayne State, Brown oversees a more than $500 million budget and has directed a retention and academic success initiative as well as an online learning program.

He has served as dean of the College of Health Professions and Social Work and interim dean of the School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Brown’s awards include the Scholar of the Year Award and the Mitchell I. Rubin Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Advancement of Medical Science in the Field of Health Care in Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The regents were also scheduled to vote on increasing the student services fee, but the vote was postponed.

“They’re [the regents] very concerned about student costs,” Price said. “They want to investigate it thoroughly before they approve.”

The board met earlier in February for its quarterly meeting, when it increased room and board rates by an average of about 3.6 percent.

The board didn’t discuss the student service fee at the regular meeting because the student service advisory committee had not voted on the proposal, Price said.
