Authorities have determined that a 43-year-old Mesquite woman fatally shot her husband and their two adult children before killing herself.

The bodies of the four family members — one of whom was a University of North Texas student — were found Wednesday, four days after a 911 caller reported hearing gunfire at the home in the 1400 block of Paintbrush Street, near South Collins Road and East Kearney Street.

The Dallas County medical examiner’s office ruled that Angelica Vazquez committed suicide. A handgun was found on the floor in the master bedroom near her body, police said.

The deaths of her husband, Marcelo Vazquez, 44, their son, 18-year-old Alejandro Vazquez, and their daughter, 21-year-old Paulina Vazquez, were ruled homicides, police said.

“Detectives are still investigating to determine a motive for this crime,” police Lt. Bill Hedgpeth said in an e-mail.

He said there was no record of previous calls to police involving the family at their home in the last year.

Friends and neighbors said that Marcelo Vazquez drove a big rig for a living and that Angelica Vazquez worked at a school.

They said that Alejandro, a recent graduate of Mesquite High School, attended nearby Eastfield College and that Paulina was home on spring break from UNT in Denton.

Police were called after gunfire was reported about 6:30 a.m. Saturday at the home. Officers were sent there but left after finding no signs of forced entry and talking to a neighbor who did not see or hear anything unusual, police said.

Police returned early Wednesday and forced their way inside after they noticed mail and newspapers accumulating.
