OAK POINT — Residents have until today to submit an application to join a committee created to identify roads, parks and other services in neighborhoods around Oak Point that need improvements.
The Oak Point City Council is asking residents to apply for the committee so that they can give input on a new capital improvements plan, which officials hope to have completed by October.
Residents will evaluate costs, funding options and help the council get an idea of where the community sees immediate needs.
Council member Keith Palmer said the city is in critical need of an improvement plan.
According to city staff members, the capital improvement plan will act as a blueprint for city development for about five years.
Projects can include street repairs, construction, water and wastewater improvements, park improvements, facilities such as police and fire stations as well as City Hall and more.
City Manager Doug Mousel said the committee will work with consultant firm Freese and Nichols Inc. to finalize the plan, which will be presented to the council for approval. The city budgeted $25,000 to hire the firm.
Mayor Jim Wohletz said to complete the road and other various projects identified by the committee, the city may need to issue bonds and raise taxes.
“But that’s all to be determined,” he said.
The project depends on committee members to guide the consultants and to provide recommendations to the City Council, officials said.
According to a preliminary schedule for the project, the committee would meet in June to discuss the plan and in August to discuss the prioritization of the projects.
Committee members are expected to attend council meetings during which funding options and the final plans will be presented to the council.
Most of the committee meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday evenings.
Because city officials wish to receive input from all residents, the council wants a single representative from each Oak Point subdivision.
Residents interested in serving on the committee must complete an application and return it to Oak Point City Hall at 100 Naylor Road by today.
