Liberty Christian wins Henderson Cup

ARGYLE — Liberty Christian School is slated to receive the Class 5A Henderson Cup on Friday in San Antonio.

The Henderson Cup, an overall school championship award given by the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, recognizes schools in five classifications that rack up the most points in 25 TAPPS championships in a school year. Schools earn points for performances in athletic, academic, speech, fine arts and one-act play events.

TAPPS officials say the cup, named for the late Johnie Henderson — the association’s first full-time executive director — and his wife, Evelyn, is presented to schools for them to display for a school year. Recipients of the cup also receive a plaque.

“It’s humbling,” said Rodney Haire, Liberty Christian president and founder. “It is euphoric.”

He attributes this year’s finish as Henderson Cup champion to the leadership in the school’s fine arts, academic and athletic departments, and parent support in giving.

Liberty Christian finished the Class 5A Henderson Cup race with 100 points, followed by Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas in second place with 78 points and Antonian College Preparatory School in San Antonio in third with 69 points.

Of the 27 schools in Class 5A, Haire said Liberty Christian is the smallest with 464 high school students. The largest school has 1,600 high school students, he said. Liberty Christian finished the year as state champions in boys track and field, baseball, one-act play, art, band and academics, and speech.

“Twenty-two points, that’s an intimidating victory, and for that to happen in a small school, that has never been done,” Haire said of the school’s total points. “I think the Henderson Cup tells the community that Liberty Christian has a balanced school.

“It really makes me very proud that they can compete on a larger stage and win. It’s a great feeling.”

Haire said this is the first year Liberty Chrisian has received the Henderson Cup in TAPPS’ largest classification. At a time when TAPPS had six classifications, the school earned the 5A award in the 2007-08 and 2006-07 school years and tied for it in the 2004-05 year, according to TAPPS. In Class 4A, the school won the cup in the 2009-10, 2008-09, 2003-04 and 1996-97 school years.

The Henderson Cup symbolizes the successes of Liberty Christian’s students, said Greg Price, the school’s athletic director.

“The reason why [we] want to be successful [is] because we feel like the Lord gave us talents, and using those talents brings glory and honor to him,” he said.
