Sanger ISD employees to get 3 percent raise

SANGER — Employees of the Sanger school district can expect to see a 3 percent increase in their pay in the 2013-14 school year.

In a three-fold vote this week, the school board voted 7-0 in favor of an across-the-board 3 percent raise for all employees, salary stipends and a $10 increase in rates for substitute personnel in the 2013-14 year.

Superintendent Kent Crutsinger said he’s hopeful the 3 percent salary increase will offset costs related with staff’s increased health insurance expenses.

“We just want to show our appreciation to our hard-working staff for another school year,” he said.

Insurance rate increases next school year vary from $324 annually to $4,776 a year based upon the plan district employees choose and whether they carry any dependents, according to district records.

Last year, the district offered a 2.5 percent pay increase for teachers and a 2.25 percent increase for all other district staff. Prior to that, district employees had not received a rate increase in two years, said Cristy Koonce, the board’s vice president.

Board President Ken Scribner said he’s pleased the board can offer a “much deserved raise” to district employees.

“I think it’s a comforting feeling for them,” he said.

The board also approved a set of routine stipends for district employees.

Daily pay rates for substitutes will return to rates offered prior to Sept. 1, 2011, the start of the 2011-12 fiscal year.

According to district records, individuals substituting in the capacity of secretary, classroom paraprofessional, clerical and auxiliary will receive $60 daily; noncertified teachers will receive a daily rate of $65, and those serving more than 10 consecutive days for the same teacher will receive $70 daily; and certified teachers will receive a daily rate of $70, and those serving more than 10 consecutive days for the same teacher will receive $80 a day.

The changes approved by the board Monday are being added to the 2013-14 budget, which the board is expected to adopt in August. The new fiscal year begins Sept. 1.
