Barnes & Noble takes over UNT bookstore while facility in works

The University of North Texas bookstore is closed this week as the space in the student union changes ownership from Follett Corp. to Barnes & Noble College, and is set to reopen as Barnes & Noble on Monday.

The move is more than a month before the scheduled opening date of Aug. 12, when Barnes & Noble College was supposed to move to a temporary facility at Avenue C and Chestnut Street as the University Union closes for renovations.

Now, Barnes & Noble College will operate the space in the student union until Aug. 12, the scheduled completion date for the temporary facility.

The timing for the transition worked out better because Follett has been on a month-to-month contract since its contract with UNT expired March 31, said Zane Reif, University Union director.

“We just pushed up the timeline because it seemed to work out for both parties,” he said.

In May, the UNT Board of Regents awarded Barnes & Noble College the 12-year bookstore contract, which was scheduled to take effect Aug. 8.

This week, Follett will be moving its inventory out of the facility or selling it to Barnes & Noble, Reif said. The bookstore closed Friday to complete the transition.

Since the facility in the union will be open for less than two months, Zeif said it won’t resemble the full bookstore that will open in August, but will still have the required textbooks and some merchandise.

Representatives for Barnes & Noble College and Follett Corp. could not be reached for comment.
