A 22-year-old man died of an apparent  drowning Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Troy Taylor, chief death investigator for Denton County, said Shedrack Onuoha was pronounced dead at 4:57 p.m. at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Denton after he was pulled from a deep end of a swimming pool.

Onuoha, investigators said, was pulled from the pool by witnesses at his apartment complex in the 300 block of Fry Street.

Taylor said witnesses saw Onuoha get into the pool and began paddling around with no initial indication of struggle.

When the witnesses realized some time had passed without hearing splashing in the pool, they checked to see if the person swimming was OK, investigators said.

“He was discovered face-down in nine foot of water,” Taylor said.

After the witnesses called 911, Denton police arrived and initiated CPR until the fire department’s arrival.

Kenneth Hedges, spokesman for the Denton Fire Department, said they received a call for a reported drowning at 4:21 p.m. and the victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Taylor said Onuoha is the sixth drowning- related death this year in the county.

“Last year, we only had eight for the year,” he said.

The medical examiner’s office said Onuoha's official cause of death is pending a toxicology report, but they don’t see any indication of foul play.
