Boy in critical condition after nearly drowning

A 13-year-old boy was in critical but stable condition at a Dallas hospital Friday after nearly drowning in a pool at the University of North Texas on Thursday night, officials said.

Kelley Reese, a UNT spokeswoman, said around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, lifeguards at the physical education building swimming pool noticed the boy — who was not identified — floating in the pool during a summer camp activity and retrieved him.

“They then began to administer emergency first aid while placing an emergency call to the Denton Fire Department,” Reese said Friday afternoon.

The boy, officials said, was attending Sports International Football Camp with an estimated 35 other campers ranging in ages from 8 to 18. Five UNT lifeguards were on duty during the camp’s swimming activities, Reese said.

John Cupit, camp director, said in his 20 years working with the camp, it was the first time he recalled a serious injury occurring.

Cupit said the four-day football camp has been held at UNT for the past nine years.

The boy was transported by air from a Denton hospital to Medical City Dallas, where he remains in intensive care, officials said.

“We are all just praying for this young man,” Cupit said. “These are just very tragic circumstances he found himself in.”

The exact cause for the incident is unknown, but Cupit said no horseplay was involved.

“We are working closely with the university during the investigation,” he said.

Reese said the entire UNT community has him, his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers.
