An 18-year-old Justin girl drowned at a Lamar County lake this week, officials said.

Chief Deputy Jeff Springer of the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office said Tyiesha Nycole Thomas was visiting friends when they went out for a swim Tuesday at Pat Mayse Lake near Powderly.

They were wading in water about chest deep near an area known as “Hippie Cove” when Thomas stepped off into deeper water, Springer said.

Springer said the two friends with Thomas tried to help, but they were unable to save her.

Several area agencies assisted in the search for Thomas, and her body was recovered by game wardens using sonar around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

“Water levels are about 17 feet deep where she was,” Springer said.

Thomas had just been accepted into the U.S. Navy, officials said.
