The Texas Department of Transportation is waiting on the new fiscal year to start before it completes a maintenance project on FM2449 near Ponder.
The agency recently milled the road as part of several road maintenance projects scheduled before the end of the fiscal year.
“Milling is when the surface is taken off the road in preparation for a brand-new overlay,” said Michelle Releford, public information officer with TxDOT’s Dallas District.
Releford said the agency was trying to use up the rest of the fiscal 2013 budget in areas of need before the new budget dollars come in.
The money came from the maintenance contract fund budgeted at $1.5 million for Denton County for the 2013 fiscal year.
Releford said the amount should be the same for 2014.
“In an area like this where we have so many roads that need overlay, we hate to give money back when we don’t need to,” she said. “We try to use up all of our budget, and we did successfully — it just happened two weeks before we got the new budget.”
Releford said 2 inches were milled off the road and it is still safe for travel. It just may not provide the ideal ride quality it will have when finished.
“Our maintenance supervisor drives it frequently to check the ride and to check for any potential potholes,” she said. “We’re going to mobilize the contractors on Sept. 1. Hopefully their schedule is such that they can come out there right away. But we are going to get them out there ASAP.”
