While it will still take a few days for students to get settled in, classes finalized and for a few, housing secured, the first day of school at Texas Woman’s University brought the campus back to life.
“It’s off to a good start, because on the first day, you’re always concerned about complaints or people who are lost or things that don’t go right, and so far there’s been almost none of that,” said Richard Nicholas, vice president of student life.
Late registration for classes will continue for four days, when students can still add and drop classes. There have been some last-minute applicants and transfers, but so far the university has been able to handle the load and find them housing. Students began moving into campus housing Wednesday and Thursday.
“The move-in finished on a very solid note,” Nicholas said. “We have had some very last-minute applicants and transfers, but we seem to be able to accommodate those.”
The day was also busy for food services and parking, Nicholas said.
This year, the university is in the process of implementing an online system for students to get their parking permits, which will start in mid-September. Until then, parking will be based on a policy of voluntary compliance, TWU Police Chief Elizabeth Pauley said.
In September, students can go through an online system to get their parking pass, print a temporary pass and pay tickets and get day passes.
“I think overall it’s going to modernize, streamline and be really user-friendly to the community,” Pauley said. “I’ve done a lot of walking and talking and surveying people, and the majority of people I’ve talked to think it’s a great idea.”
The campus police department had a busy day, and it was a bit chaotic but manageable, Pauley said.
Meanwhile, Nicholas said he was glad that students were back in full force.
“It looks like a university again,” Nicholas said. “The sidewalks are full and the union lobby is full. A lot of students are just stopping by who want to say they’re glad to be back. In the kind of office I work in, that’s a good thing.”
