Fan-favorite events to be brought back

PILOT POINT — City officials and organizers say they are planning to bring back fan-favorite events for the fourth annual Bonnie and Clyde Days, including the movie re-enactments, the Pilot Point Soap Box Challenge and the live musical entertainment. 

The event begins Oct. 12 and officials indicate they’ve received a lot of response from local residents who say they’re looking forward to the event — an event in which Pilot Point attempts to relive the late 1920s and early 1930s time period.

The Bonnie and Clyde Days began in 2010 to commemorate the filming that took place in the city of a bank robbery scene in the 1967 movie, Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. 

Officials say that in the 1960s, Pilot Point had a busy downtown square with two grocery stores, a drugstore, cafes and a car dealership. 

Today, however, Pilot Point looks a little different. 

Local leaders wanted to use the event as one of many efforts to help reinvigorate activity on the square. 

Main Street director Jeremy Sander said this year the city decided to place more focus on keeping all of their events on the square. The decision resulted in officials deciding to cut the parade. 

Instead, the parade will be replaced with a 5K run or walk, Sander said. 

“The 5K begins in the morning and participants will finish their run on the square, where hopefully they will stay for the rest of the day,” he said. 

Last year, the city incorporated several activities for kids including a bounce house, an inflatable maze and face painting. New activities officials seek to include are a petting zoo, train rides and some period-specific games for the kids. 

Some of the live musicians last year received great feedback from people who attended, city officials said.

Attendees can expect more musical acts that will last throughout the day, ending with headliner Brian Houser at the beer garden, Sander said.

Houser is a Denton-based country singer who describes himself as a voice for the common working man. 

To help further promote the event and grow it from a local to a regional event, the city hired a public relations and marketing firm.

Updating the logo and marketing materials and working with local and regional media to cover the event are among the responsibilities the firm is helping the city with, City Manager Tom Adams said.

More than 5,000 attended the event last year, and he expects that even more will attend this year, Sander said. 

“People are excited about this,” he said. “As soon as last year’s event ended, everyone was already asking about next year’s event.”

“This is definitely a community-driven event,” Sander said. “It’s been very successful and hopefully it will continue because it benefits the community and the residents.”
