Jewel Garcia, 20, of Justin, died early Sunday morning in a single vehicle accident two miles south of Justin after she lost control of the SUV she was driving, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Dennis Rodriguez, 32, was a passenger in the vehicle and was taken to a nearby hospital, but only sustained minor injuries, officials said.
Garcia was driving a 2004 GMC Yukon, traveling westbound on Sam Reynolds Road about two miles south of Justin when it left the roadway and struck a utility pole, said DPS Trooper Lonny Haschel.
After striking the pole, the vehicle then traveled back across the roadway, went through a fence and overturned, ejecting the woman, he said. Garcia died at the scene of the crash, Haschel said, adding that officers were called to the scene around 1 a.m.
As of Sunday evening, officials said they are unsure how or why Garcia lost control of the vehicle. She did not have her seat belt on at the time, according to the report. Rodriguez, the passenger, was wearing his seat belt, officials said.
The crash is still under investigation, according to the DPS report.
