ARGYLE — Denton County officials reported a human case of the West Nile virus in Argyle this week, and Argyle town officials said they will monitor the situation to ensure that any threat is contained.
Town officials said there are free mosquito dunks available to the public to place in ponds or standing water to help keep the mosquito population in check.
Argyle residents can either call or stop by Town Hall to pick up their free dunks.
The town will also begin placing dunks around town in ponds, streams and sources of standing water.
“They can even call me, and with their permission, I’ll go onto their property and drop the dunks in myself,” Public Works Director Troy Norton said.
Town Manager Charles West said he doesn’t believe that the West Nile case reported this week was contracted in Argyle.
“We believe that it came from a mosquito outside of Argyle town limits,” he said.
However, West said the town will continue to monitor the situation as if the virus originated in the town.
This is the fifth human case of the West Nile virus in Denton County and the first in Argyle, according to county data.
The other cases originated from Denton and Flower Mound.
In 2012, six human cases were reported in ZIP code 76226, which includes Argyle. That year, North Texas saw the highest outbreak of the West Nile virus to date, according to state data.
In Denton on Tuesday, the Denton City Council approved a resolution authorizing ground spraying after hearing an update on the mosquito traps and reports of human cases of West Nile virus in Denton.
Late last week, a second human case of the mosquito-borne disease was reported in Denton, and officials said the victim lives in a neighborhood near Wiggly Field Dog Park.
A city crew will spray the south Denton neighborhood beginning at around 10 p.m. today and finishing at about 3 a.m. Friday, weather permitting.
