Primary election stirring interest

Filing begins today for the 2014 primary election, and the upcoming face-off for Texas governor has already sparked local interest.

Both major Denton County political parties are looking forward to the crop of candidates they will field for the election. Filing continues through 6 p.m. Dec. 9.

“The excitement being generated by state Sen. Wendy Davis running for governor is inspiring a great number of people to step forward and consider public office for themselves,” said Phyllis Wolper, head of the Denton County Democratic Party.

Denton County Democrats fielded six candidates in the last primary election and two of them were running for the top spot in the Democratic Party. Wolper won the race. Wolper said she now knows of at least eight candidates interested in running, including one eyeing the county judge’s seat, and that number could increase.

“The enhanced technology being provided by the Texas Democratic Party, the overwhelming support from the party, that is extremely helpful to our candidates and inspiring many people to step forward now who planned to run in future elections,” she said.

On the other side of the aisle, the Denton County Republican Party — led by Dianne Edmondson — is confident the GOP will be fielding multiple candidates as it has in the past several elections.

“We will have 40 to 50 this time,” Edmondson said. “I think the majority of them will be filing [today].”

The continued surge for the GOP is due to a number of potential candidates wanting to be in office and believing that running as a Republican is the way to get elected, she said. Also, a slew of retirements from a number of judges and justices of the peace have left open seats, Edmondson said.

The Denton County Republican Party will play host to a Candidate Filing Day Party from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the party’s headquarters, 1400 N. Corinth St., Suite 106 in Corinth. The event is open to the public.

“It’s definitely an exciting time, and we think [today] will be a fun time for our potential candidates and have some fellowship and all be ready for that primary on March 4,” Edmondson said. “And we are confident once the primary is over, all of our Republican voters will be united as they go to the polls [next] November and elect a full slate of Republican candidates again.”
