The Denton school district and many other local school districts and private schools will remain closed for a third day today because of inclement weather, including the University of North Texas.
UNT had announced on Monday it would resume classes at noon today but at 9:45 a.m. this morning the university announced it would remain closed all day.
Texas Woman’s University in Denton will remain closed, but the Dallas campus will be open, officials said.
“The roads, bridges and overpasses remain too slick for our buses, parents and students to drive on safely to and from school,” said Sharon Cox, a spokeswoman for the Denton school district. “We just want to emphasize that this decision was made always with our first priority in mind, and that’s the safety of our students.”
The district will make up at least two of the inclement weather days on April 18 and May 23. Annually, the district designates two dates in its school calendar as makeup days for weather. It has not been determined what the district will do if it must close for additional inclement weather days this school year, Cox said.
Michelle Simms, the marketing and communications director for Liberty Christian School, which will also be closed today, said in an e-mail that a decision was made to close the school today because of icy conditions on the school parking lots and sidewalks and “the variety of conditions on the roads our parents and high school students must drive.”
Private schools are not required by the state to make up school days because of weather, as are public schools. Officials with the Texas Education Agency said that public school districts and charter schools must first use their designated weather makeup days before requesting a waiver to avoid making up additional days.
DeEtta Culbertson, a spokeswoman for the TEA, said in an e-mail that waivers have been granted for major weather events, such as Hurricanes Ike and Rita.
Students at Selwyn College Preparatory School, a private school in Denton that will also be closed, will make up the two days in the spring, according to Mellina Stucky, a spokeswoman for the school. The school has three designated makeup days, on April 18, April 21 and May 26.
Principal Stacey Baxter at Denton Calvary Academy, which will also be closed today, said students will attend school Friday to complete finals that were postponed because of the closures. The school will enter its break for the holidays after tests are finished Friday, she wrote in an e-mail.
Rescheduled meetings, tests
A public hearing on the proposed Denton elementary attendance zones for the 2014-15 set for Monday at Harpool Middle School was postponed again because of bad road conditions. No date has been determined for when the hearing will be rescheduled, Cox said.
“It has not been finalized, but we will contact all the parents affected, the families of the students affected by this,” Cox said.
A workshop discussion on the proposed attendance boundaries slated for tonight’s board meeting is also on hold, Cox said.
A Sanger school board meeting, originally slated for 6 p.m. Monday was rescheduled for noon Wednesday.
“We don’t want to take a chance on getting someone hurt,” board President Ken Scribner said Monday.
The rescheduled meeting will take place in the Denton County Special Education Cooperative Building, 601 Elm St., in Sanger.
School board meetings in the Little Elm and Northwest school districts, originally slated for Monday, were either canceled or rescheduled. The Northwest school district has rescheduled its board meeting for Dec. 16 and Little Elm school board will also meet Dec. 16.
Students unable to take the SAT exam Saturday because of the bad weather will be given makeup days by The College Board.
Colleges and universities
At the University of North Texas, information about final exams is available at http://registrar.unt.edu/exams/final-exam-schedule.
Commencement ceremonies will not be affected by the change in schedule.
At Texas Woman’s University, final exams were rescheduled, as was the senior breakfast/lunch, which now will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday in Hubbard Hall.
North Central Texas College campuses opened at 11 a.m. Tuesday. According to the college website finals scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday will be rescheduled for Thursday.
"The days we missed ... will not affect graduation," said Darin Allred, an NCTC spokesman in a voice message. "We still have graduation ceremonies on Thursday and Friday, and the finals will be made up on Friday. So Monday's finals will be scheduled for Friday at the very same time they were [originally] scheduled."
