A Denton County man was found dead after an early morning fire Tuesday in a garage apartment in an unincorporated area of the county, officials said.

The man — who apparently had tried to escape from the fire — had not been identified by late Wednesday and his cause of death remains under investigation, officials said.

“He [the unidentified man] was found by the steps so it does appear he tried to get out,” said Denton County Fire Marshal Jody Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said a woman who lives on the 20-acre property called to report a fire about 8:50 a.m. Tuesday. The property is located in the 6100 block of FM1830, just south of Country Club Road and north of David Fort Road.

Gonzalez said the fire appeared to have started in the garage apartment, and was largely contained to that structure. The main home located next to the garage sustained some smoke and fire damage, according to county officials.

Gonzalez said investigators were still assessing the cause of the blaze Wednesday.

Argyle, Denton, Flower Mound and Double Oak fire departments responded to the fire. Damages are estimated at $50,000.
