A high-speed chase on New Year’s Eve ended with a robbery suspect in jail.

Derek Richardson, 31, was charged with robbery, evading detention with a vehicle and theft of a motor vehicle after he reportedly committed three felonies Tuesday afternoon.

Officer Ryan Grelle, spokesman for Denton police, said the first call came in at 12:52 p.m. when a business reported a stolen vehicle in the 600 block of Fort Worth Drive. The thief took a delivery pick-up truck from the business and soon after headed to a sandwich shop in the 3900 block of Teasley Lane, Grelle said.

At 2:29 p.m., an employee at the sandwich shop notified police that a man had attempted to rob the business.

“He came in saying he was going to rob the place and that he had a gun,” Grelle said. He eventually left the business without anything and without displaying a weapon.

Ten minutes later, officers spotted the stolen truck at Highland Park Road and Kendolph Drive, and the pursuit ensued. Grelle said officers pursued the truck at speeds of up to 90 miles per hour as it looped around the southern portion of town before hopping onto Interstate 35E.

The vehicle wrecked before hitting spike strips that had been placed along the interstate across from Chili’s in Hickory Creek, Grelle said.

Richardson was arrested at the scene and the investigation is continuing.

University of North Texas and Corinth police, along with the Texas Department of Public Safety, all assisted in the pursuit.
