Fans head to Heart of Dallas Bowl to watch UNT-UNLV showdown

A wave of green will head south to Dallas today, as the University of North Texas Mean Green football team and thousands of fans flock to the Cotton Bowl to see UNT play in the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

UNT will make its first appearance in a bowl game since 2004, facing the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. The game kicks off at 11 a.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.

There are specials all along the way to the game — and back in Denton afterward — for those willing to turn out in green gear and spend a few, well, greenbacks.

The A-train is offering a free trip to Dallas, via Dallas Area Rapid Transit. On the way to the game, fans can pick up buy-one, get-one-free breakfast tacos at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop on Industrial Street for pregame fuel. Fuzzy’s will also have drink specials throughout the day for those who stick around to watch the game or come by afterward, co-owner Mel Knight said.

Those who start the day in Dallas can attend the Mean Green Tailgate from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Embarcadero Building at Fair Park. Those who haven’t purchased tickets can pay $15 cash when they arrive to see the Green Brigade marching band, UNT cheerleaders, UNT dancers and the mascot Scrappy. More breakfast tacos will be available at the tailgating party, as each ticket comes with two tacos and a sausage wrap with Mean Green chili stew.

Several local bars and restaurants are offering specials.

East Side Social Club will open at 10:30 a.m. to accommodate fans before the game starts, and Lucky Lou’s will open an hour early, at 11 a.m., just in time for the game.

Several downtown Denton restaurants are offering specials throughout the day to promote the bowl game as well. Rusty Taco will have half-off beers, margaritas and sides all day, and Beth Marie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream & Soda Fountain will give fans in apparel or with a ticket stub 10 percent off. Bosses Pizza will also give fans in Mean Green 10 percent off all food purchases.

Wine Squared will give 25 percent off bottles to go for Mean Green fans and free bread and dipping oil with every order throughout the day. They will also offer $3 house wines and 50 cents off beer.
