A special commemoration for Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be held Sunday in Flower Mound, with a Denton woman who is the daughter of a civil rights leader as the featured speaker.
The event, hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Flower Mound High School auditorium at 3411 Peters Colony Road. The theme for the event is “Embracing Our Diversity.”
Chelle Luper Wilson of Denton, the daughter of the late civil rights leader Claire Luper, will be the guest speaker. Flower Mound Mayor Tom Hayden will bring greetings to the group, according to a press release.
Luper led sit-ins of lunch counters in Oklahoma City 18 months before the historic sit-ins in Greensboro, N.C., according to the release. Wilson is the owner of Power Moves Communications.
The program will also include music, speakers and dancers. Awards will be presented to students in grades four through 12 who were winners in the group’s Dr. King art and essay contests. The winning art and excerpts from the winning essays will later be on display in the Lewisville school district’s administration building.
