Three more candidate forums are coming up in Denton County as the March 4 primary election gets closer.
“We’re seeing a lot more forums than in the past,” said Dianne Edmondson, Denton County Republican Party chairwoman. “Many of our clubs have decided they want to have their own forum for members in their geographic area.”
The local Republican Party has close to 50 candidates and 10 contested races in the March primary. The Democrats have fielded 10 candidates for the November general election but none will face a primary challenger.
“Seems like we have a lot more candidates, not counting statewide,” Edmondson said. “I think there’s more candidates, therefore more need for forums. Name recognition in and of itself is not necessarily enough. [Voters] need to know what those people stand for and who would bring the best professional and political qualifications to the office.”
Here are the latest forums to be announced:
Monday, Copeland Government Center, 1400 FM424 in Aubrey. The forum will focus on local races, including county judge, district attorney, county clerk and two local judicial positions. The event will begin with a meet-and-greet session at 6 p.m. The forum will begin at 7 p.m. and will be moderated by attorney John Haughton. The public is invited.
Wednesday, Robson Ranch Main Clubhouse, 9400 Ed Robson Blvd. in Denton. The forum will focus on statewide and local races, with several candidates for lieutenant governor, attorney general, Congress, the state Legislature and local Denton County races expected to attend. The event will begin with a meet-and-greet at 6 p.m., followed by the forum beginning at 7 p.m. The public is invited.
Feb. 22 — The Denton County Democratic Party will have its annual chili supper and candidates forum at the Denton Center for the Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St. from 6 to 9 p.m. The forum is expected to include Democratic candidates for local, state and federal offices. Tickets cost $20 per person.
