On his final day as president of the University of North Texas, Lane Rawlins passed the president’s flag — and the barbecue sauce — to Neal Smatresk.
The two met up at Rudy’s Country Store on Friday evening for the official hand-off, and to settle a friendly wager they made over the Heart of Dallas Bowl when Smatresk was president of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas but had already been selected as UNT’s next president.
The two bet that the loser would wear gear from the winning team during a meal in a public place. Now, nearly a month after UNT’s win, the two met up to finish the deal.
Smatresk showed up wearing a Mean Green football jersey, No. 3 like wide receiver Brelan Chancellor, and a Mean Green hat, and even donned a plastic beak to match UNT’s mascot, Scrappy.
After initial photos, Rawlins passed on the president’s white-and-green UNT flag, one that was passed to him when he took office.
The two mingled with other UNT officials and Rawlins’ wife, Mary Jo, before Smatresk bought dinner — two plates of brisket.
