Another candidate has filed to run for the City Council District 2 seat, making it a race for residents in far northern and eastern Denton neighborhoods, as well as a few neighborhoods on the west side of central Denton.
Glen Farris, 34, whose full name is Glendon Farris Squibb, filed Wednesday, joining John Richard Ryan, 48, who filed last week, for a place on the ballot.
The District 2 seat is open because current council member Dalton Gregory resigned his seat to run for the at-large Place 5 seat, although his resignation won’t be effective until the canvassing of the May 10 election.
This isn’t the first bid for a council seat by Ryan, a longtime Denton resident who owns a wine shop and delicatessen downtown. He ran unsuccessfully for District 2 in 2007 and for Place 5 in 2008.
He filed again for the District 2 race in 2009, when Gregory first ran and won, but withdrew in order to devote his attention to his fledgling business. It was the close outcome of his first race, between him and Rudy Moreno, that inspired him to run again, initially thinking of Place 5.
“But I sat down with Dalton Gregory a couple of weeks ago and decided to run for the seat he was vacating instead,” Ryan said.
This will be Farris’ first run for public office.
Farris, a musician who also handles music bookings as a production manager, is one of three people who write for the popular local website WeDentonDoIt.com, with his occasional column “Mr. Farris Goes to City Hall.”
Farris has volunteered for community groups including the downtown neighborhood association and the Denton Main Street Association. He sits on the city’s Public Art Committee and the current citizens’ bond advisory committee, which will recommend a plan for the November bond election.
“I’ve always been intrigued with how our city is run since I’ve gotten here,” said Farris, who has lived in Denton for 10 years.
So far, only Gregory and the two candidates for mayor, Jean Schaake and Chris Watts, have filed for places on the ballot.
No one has yet filed for Place 6, the other at-large seat on the ballot this year.
