Power outage continues in Little Elm area

An underground power line failure triggered a widespread outage in Little Elm overnight Thursday, affecting many homes and a school in the area.

Danny Hodges, the area manager for Oncor, said the call came about 9:35 p.m. Thursday and it took crews a while to diagnose the problem and bring in all the necessary equipment, since the line runs under FM720.

“They made repairs during the night and are bringing the area back up in stages,” Hodges said.

The line helps power a large subdivision where the homes have electric heat, making that staging necessary, he said.

At about 10:30 a.m. today, about 50 percent of the customers in the area had power restored, Hodges said.

Oncor expects to have power completely restored by this afternoon.

Texas Education Centers shared the news on its Facebook page that classes at its Little Elm campus were canceled Friday because the school was without power. Earlier Friday the school posted it would delay the school opening by two hours because of the power outage but later announced the closing.

School officials said th outage also affected Terra Southwest Water co-op, which reported a mechanical issue due to the power outage.

Lisa Stanley, superintendent for the Texas Education Centers, said the decision was made to cancel classes at the Little Elm campus after officials were notified that the power would not be restored as soon as they expected.

“With no guarantee that we would have water or electricity by 10 [a.m.], we simply had no choice but to cancel classes today at that campus,” Stanley said.

The Little Elm campus has 185 students.
