Some worked with agency to try to address concerns

Southeast Denton residents got a recent tour of the Denton County Transportation Authority’s new bus maintenance and operations center as part of an ongoing effort by DCTA to make the agency’s presence in the neighborhood as positive as it can be.

The new $8.2 million bus facility unveiled last month will be DCTA’s center for vehicle repair and maintenance, replacing the authority’s leased facility located at the Denton landfill on Mayhill Road.

About 130 employees will work at the new facility, which will house the 80 buses in the DCTA fleet.

DCTA has been working with members of the Southeast Denton Neighborhood Association for months on mitigating the impact of the facility on the neighborhood.

Residents’ worries had included increased noise and light, safety and air quality.

“We’re happy to do what we can to be a good neighbor,” DCTA president Jim Cline said of the private tour last week. “We wanted to take the opportunity to show our neighbors what it looks like on the other side, and some of the components we added to the design to be sensitive to our impact on the neighborhood.”

Now that the facility is open, a few of the members who worked on committees with DCTA give the facility a passing grade.

“It’s a nice building,” said Willie Sellers, who also attended the grand-opening ceremony. “They’ve done basically everything they said they were going to do as far as trying to mitigate impact on the neighborhood over there with the lighting and trying to put the buffers as far as the sound.”

Sellers said he spoke to the facility foreman, who tells the drivers and maintenance staff to refrain from yelling across the yard at each other so as not to disturb the neighborhood.

“So far, it’s been a happy marriage,” Sellers said.
