Denton police arrested a 21-year Garland man Saturday in connection to a fiery head-on collision last weekend in northeast Denton that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

Hector Soto Jr. was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault after he was released from the hospital from injuries he sustained during the crash that killed Tessa Butler, 27, of Aubrey and seriously injured Roger Bryant, 49, of Denton.

Police said a pickup driven by Soto was traveling southbound on Sherman Drive when it collided head-on with a four-door Mazda just north of Long Road shortly before 11 p.m. last Sunday. Soto crossed the center line to pass other southbound vehicles when the collision occurred.

Butler was a passenger in the Mazda and Bryant was the driver, police said.

Denton Fire Department officials reported that Soto’s pickup became airborne for several yards following the collision, landed on a fence and caught fire. Soto was ejected from his pickup before it erupted into flames.

Byrant’s condition wasn’t available but police reported this week his injuries were non-life threatening.

Soto’s bond had not been set as of Saturday afternoon.
